Psittacus, the parrot from Ovid's Amores, is the first translator. PSITTACUS PROTOCOL borrows this mythic figure to present a manual for translators. Composed of four articles on the structure of the world, the translator's obligations, the harmony and discord of communication, and silence, plus a warning, this text exists in several languages and functions as both rulebook and doctrine.
On stage, multiple parrot dolls are arranged. They speak the same text solo, in alternation, or in chorus.
“Language only passes through the one who speaks.” Even silence passes through a body. Through translation without an original, and the voices that repeat it, PSITTACUS PROTOCOL asks about the impossibility of communication and the will to transmit that persists nonetheless.
