Prayer Conductor

Interactive Electronic Music Sculpture

Year
2025
Medium
3D-printed sculpture (crown of thorns and spine), custom electronics, real-time voice-based sound processing

Tephillah: Contactless Contact

The crown of thorns symbolizes sacrifice and redemption, while the spine represents the supportive structure of life — these elements meet the artist's processed voice to create a new form of prayer. During the performance, the artist becomes simultaneously a supplicant and a performer. This is an attempt to algorithmically recreate the process by which conscious language transforms into a third language in glossolalic prayer, an experiment that reinterprets through electronic music the expansion of an individual's voice into communal prayer within traditional religious ritual.

The sound is created using Teal Choi's voice as the sole material. Each thorn protrusion and vertebral point on the object (interface) is mapped to individual letters of the alphabet, containing distinct sound fragments crafted from the voice. These sounds undergo various real-time processing according to the performer's gestures, transforming into glossolalic characteristics. This transcends mere instrument performance, becoming an act of prayer and communication through the artist's internalized voice.

Interactive electronic music sculpture: Prayer Conductor (2025)

A composite form combining Christ's crown of thorns with the human spine — an interactive electronic music sculpture where two symbols merge into a single organic structure. From the circular structure of the crown of thorns, the continuous segments of the spine extend vertically, with thorns positioned at each intersection and protrusion.

Supported by Arts Korea Lab and WeSA UNDER LAB, 2025.
